Frequently Asked Questions

1. What types of essays do you edit?
I edit all types of college application essays, including the Common App personal statement, supplemental essays (such as the “Why Us?” essay), and other school-specific prompts.

2. Do you write essays for students?
No—I don’t write essays for students. My role is to help you express your authentic voice, strengthen your story, and polish your work so it reflects you. Admissions officers can spot AI- or ghostwritten essays immediately, and authenticity is what sets your application apart.

3. How do you help make sure my essay doesn’t sound like it was written by AI?
I’ve developed editing techniques specifically to “humanize” essays. This includes spotting common AI fingerprints (like overuse of certain words or too-perfect structure), encouraging storytelling that’s specific and vulnerable, and coaching you to write in your natural voice. I also run essays through an AI-detection and voice continuity analysis as part of my editing process.

4. What if I don’t know what to write about?
That’s completely normal! I provide a comprehensive brainstorming questionnaire with prompts, “dos and don’ts,” and reflection exercises to help ideas flow. Many students discover their best essay ideas this way.

5. How much does it cost?

  • Brainstorming session (questionnaire + idea support): $75

  • Revision and feedback (up to 250 words): $250

  • Proofreading and polishing: starting at $100
Custom pricing is available for essays longer than 250 words or for bundled services.

6. How long does the process take?
Turnaround time is typically 3–5 business days depending on the service you choose. If you need a faster turnaround, please contact me—I’ll let you know if I can accommodate your deadline.

7. Who will be editing my essay?
All editing is done by me personally, Heather Hester. I bring 20+ years of professional editing experience, plus the perspective of both an author and a parent who has guided three of my own kids successfully through the college application process.

8. What if I just want a quick proofread before I submit?
Absolutely. If you already have a strong essay draft, I offer a Proof and Polish option that focuses on grammar, clarity, flow, and final polish so you can hit “submit” with confidence.
